Week of October 13th-17th

This week we will be reading the non-fiction story Penguin Chick.   We will be identifying the main idea and supporting details to improve comprehension.  We will be learning how to use graphic organizers to help organize our thoughts and ideas about the story.  The spelling test, grammar test and reading selection test will all be on Thursday the 16th, as there is no school on Friday.  Other areas of focus are listed below:

Grammar-Common and Proper Nouns

Spelling- Syllable patterns- dividing words in to syllables can help with decoding.  If the syllable ends with a consonant as in lemon the vowel is short.  If the syllable ends with a vowel then the vowel will have the long sound as in pilot.

October 6-10
Hello!!
This week we are reading the story My Rows and Piles of Coins.  The main comprehension skill we will be focusing on is character traits and setting.  It is important to review the vocabulary words and meanings on the reading skills/spelling sheet sent home each Monday as those are tested each week on our reading selection test.  Our AR goal for this quarter is 20 points.  If they focus on 5 points per week they will be right on target to meet the goal.   They are able to attain 2 points per week on our reading selections in class and are always encouraged to read when their work is completed.  Below is a list of concepts we will be working on this week:

Reading-Characters and Setting

Grammar-Compound Sentences

Spelling Pattern- ou as in out and oy as in toy

Math- Addition Properties-Commutative, Associative and Identity
