Week of February 2-6th

This week we will be reading the biography of America's Champion Swimmer  and identifying fact and opinion statements.

We will begin our 2 week swim on February 4th- February 19th.  Please make sure your child has a hat and warm coat to walk to and from the pool.

Each student should be focusing on earning 5 AR point per week of which 2 can be earned from our weekly story and leveled readers.  We  also have 30 minutes of AR reading time every Thursday.  Please encourage your child to read each night to accomplish this goal.  

We will be completing our Geometry Unit this week and will take the Outcome test on Thursday if time or Monday of next week.

December 8-12

This week we will be reading the story Night Letters.  We will focus our comprehension on drawing conclusions from what we already know and what we read to understand the story. We have our Christmas concert on Tuesday,  December 9th at 6:30.  Our Christmas Party will be on December 19th.

November 24-26

We will be reviewing and taking our Unit 2 Benchmark test this week.  Please review vocabulary words for the whole unit.  Your child has the vocabulary sheets in the back of the blue folder.
We began the time/money unit in math.  Please discuss with your child time to nearest minute and elapsed time.  Also have them practice telling you two ways to say a time.  Example..its 8:15 or a quarter after 8 or its 8:40 or 20 minutes to 9.  I wish you all a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Week of November 17-21

Our story this week is The Gardner  with an emphasis being placed on cause and effect....what happened and why it happened.  Please encourage your child to read nightly at home.  They should have 15 AR points by the end of this week.  Students can stay with me to read Tuesday, Thursday and Friday after school.

Week of November 10-14

This week we will be reading the story William's House.  This is a historical fiction story similar to the way of life of the first settlers in America.  We will be using facts and details from the story as well as background knowledge to draw conclusions about the story.  Veteran's Day is November 11th so we will discussing the importance of recognizing and thanking the many men and women who have served our country.  How very grateful I am to all of you who have served and fought for my freedoms!!

Week of November 3-7

This week we will be reading the story Tops & Bottoms by Janet Stevens.   This is a great story with an important lesson to be learned.  We will be learning about Author's Purpose and determining whether the author is writing a story in order to inform, persuade or entertain the audience.  It will be another short week so our spelling test will be on Thursday.  I look forward to visiting with you all this week about your child's progress.

Week of October 13th-17th

This week we will be reading the non-fiction story Penguin Chick.   We will be identifying the main idea and supporting details to improve comprehension.  We will be learning how to use graphic organizers to help organize our thoughts and ideas about the story.  The spelling test, grammar test and reading selection test will all be on Thursday the 16th, as there is no school on Friday.  Other areas of focus are listed below:

Grammar-Common and Proper Nouns

Spelling- Syllable patterns- dividing words in to syllables can help with decoding.  If the syllable ends with a consonant as in lemon the vowel is short.  If the syllable ends with a vowel then the vowel will have the long sound as in pilot.
